The purpose of this dietary supplement is to provide an active form of vitamin B12 (cobalamin), methylcobalamin, for the heart and maintenance of healthy red blood cells. Vitamin B12 is found in animal foods such as dairy, eggs, fish, and meat, with vegans being more prone to vitamin B12 deficiency anemia. Although a natural deficiency of this vitamin can occur at any age, it is more common after the age of 65. Certain medications can also impair vitamin B12 absorption. Symptoms of this vitamin deficiency include fatigue, forgetfulness, tinnitus, heartburn, irritability, and a weakened immune system.
It is a water-soluble vitamin in the body. When activated, it is called methylcobalamin, which is the predominant form of vitamin B12 in the body.
Methylcobalamin's function is to aid in the transfer of a carbon group to the enzyme methionine synthetase, a process known as methylation. The enzyme plays an extremely important role: metabolizing homocysteine into methionine.
It is vital for the health of the nervous system and is one of the key nutrients required for the formation of healthy red blood cells. It is also involved in the body's iron storage. Like folic acid, vitamin B12 functions as a methyl group donor and therefore helps reduce homocysteine levels (a byproduct of protein digestion) to levels considered adequate.
Vitamin B12 is activated into methylcobalamin through a methylation reaction carried out by the enzyme methionine synthetase reductase. Genetic alterations in the gene responsible for this enzyme can reduce the efficiency of its activation. By providing the body with methylcobalamin, we bypass this step, thus ensuring efficient homocysteine metabolism.
As a dietary supplement, vitamin B12 is available in several forms, the most common being cyanocobalamin. The active forms are methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin. Studies indicate that methylcobalamin, being active, can be immediately absorbed by the body, while cyanocobalamin still needs to be converted by the body to its active form by the enzyme methionine reductase synthase (MTRR).
Unfortunately, this conversion is inadequate in many people for a variety of reasons, including genetic abnormalities in the MTRR gene and certain health disorders, such as pernicious anemia and diabetes. In these cases, methylcobalamin is the preferred supplemental source of B12.
Solgar is a brand whose philosophy is to promote well-being. It produces supplements with the strictest production and quality control standards. Furthermore, it carefully selects its raw materials and does not use preservatives, flavor enhancers, or artificial colors. -
