    S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM-e) is an organic compound formed by the reaction between L-methionine and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) by the enzyme methionine adenosyltransferase. SAM-e is found in all cells and body fluids, where it participates as a methyl group donor in more than 40 biochemical reactions in the body.

    SAMe is an amino acid that plays a crucial role in the nervous system, particularly in regulating mood. It helps repair the myelin sheaths that cover axons, increasing overall nerve sensitivity.

    SAMe also increases the production of serotonin and melatonin by degrading catecholamines, thus possessing powerful antidepressant action and potentially being a useful adjunct in the treatment of resistant depression. SAMe is also an excellent anti-inflammatory and analgesic for osteoarthritis, due to its chemical properties that allow it to release sulfur compounds to form glucosamine and chondroitin.
