Descrição
Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (IUPAC: 4-aminobutanoic), also known by its acronym in English GABA (Gamma-AminoButyric Acid), is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the Central Nervous System of mammals.
It plays an important role in regulating neuronal excitability throughout the nervous system. It is an important neurotransmitter, acting as a neurosynaptic inhibitor by binding to specific receptors. As a unique neurotransmitter, gamma-aminobutyric acid induces inhibition of the central nervous system (CNS), causing sedation.
Anxiety and nervousness result from the generation of an exaggerated action potential in neurons. GABA passes through synapses and binds to GABA receptors on the next neuron. This binding allows chloride channels to open, hyperpolarizing the neuron, thus inhibiting the generation of the action potential in the neuron; the result of this inhibitory effect is decreased anxiety, nervousness, and greater ease in falling asleep. -
