Its Latin name is Uncaria tomentosa. It is a climbing vine that can reach 30 meters in height. Native to South America, it grows in forests with abundant sunlight. The bark, leaves, and roots are used because they contain pentacyclic oxindole alkaloids (isopteropodine, pteropodine, mitraphylline, hirsutine, and others), polyhydroxylated triterpenes, indole alcohols, organic acids, flavonoids, tannins, procyanidins, and bitter compounds, among others. This supplement is typically used for rheumatic problems, gastritis, peptic ulcers, diabetes, intestinal inflammation, viruses, asthma, menstrual disorders, and Crohn's disease, among others.
